Choose your domain name: you said easy?
When creating a business or brand
to live on the web or not, one of the first steps to achieve is the search for
a domain name.
Let's go back to the creation of
your domain name. The right combination is to associate 2 or 3 terms.
Typically, you will find the name of the company and the main activity. In some
ways, what is found in your website.
Example: marque-voiture.pk,
marque-auto-luxe.com.
Do not think that the domain name
is only for the search engine. It is also created for the user. Remember that
you will communicate on your domain name on all your media (business cards,
brochures, web banners or radio). The shorter it is, the easier it will be for
the user to remember and promote it.
Dash or without dash?
Let's start with the previous
example marque-voiture.fr. When you put dashes, Google will read each word
independently of others: "your brand" and "car". In the
opposite case, if you put marquevoiture.fr , Google and the other search
engines will include "marque car". While the word "car" is
present, it will still help to go up in the results but it will have less
impact.
Example: Make the request
"auto", the website autoplus.com will come out with the word
"auto" in bold.
Which extension to choose?
Regularly, our customers are a
little lost in the extension to take for their domain name. Google has never
communicated that one extension is favored over another. It will depend on the
target and purpose of your website.
Of course, an NGO or an association
will opt for a .org while a website dedicated to the French market will choose
a .pk even if a .com is not penalizing.
For a small business wanting a
multilingual website despite the low budget, a .com domain name will make more
sense. Each language will be in a different directory (.com / en /, .com / en,
...).
While a company wanting an
optimized website or e-commerce website will opt instead for one language by a
different domain: .pk for Pakistan, .co.uk for Great Britain, com or .us for
the States United States or .de for Germany. The extent of the work and
maintenance of this kind of configuration should not be underestimated.
